Real Texas Wedding: Robert + Marie, Part II

There's so much to love in this Harrison Studio wedding: gorgeous, sunlit portraits, white bridal boots (yeehaw!), a whimsical four-tier masterpiece from Edet Okon of Satin Slices.  This is what Southern weddings are all about!  For moresweet shots of Marie + her handsome groom, take a peek at the photographers' blog post here.

Tell us about finding your wedding dress: Robert and I decided to have a short engagement so I had to get busy! My mom came to Austin a few days after the proposal and after 4 wedding boutiques and about 30 dresses, I tried on the right one. I had an idea for how I wanted the straps to look, so we had them made. We also played around with adding a sash and flowers until we got the look right. All in a days work.
Describe your wedding flowers: Lots of peonies with hydrangeas and sweet pea. I wanted something soft and seasonal and had to have hydrangeas and peonies because they're my favorite.
Describe your wedding cake:  I saw a picture of a cake somewhere and fell in love. A friend of mine who makes cakes knew he could make what I described and he did –it was exactly what I wanted. Very simple, ivory with rough gold stripes. The edible dogwood flowers made such a romantic addition. The layers included carrot cake, spice cake, almond cake, chocolate and vanilla, with raspberry, chocolate ganache, cream cheese and hazelnut filling layered throughout. Something for everybody!

What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome while planning your wedding? Figuring out how to transform a ranch into a venue. Unforseen problems like rampant poison ivy, mud, electrical issues, lit parking, etc. were all challenges. The day of, I woke up to a downpour that had been going all night. Everything was soaked and there were puddles everywhere that were growing by the minute. We had to rent a water vac and vacuum up the tennis court and all sorts of craziness but thankfully it stopped raining and dried up by 6pm. It was a very close call but well worth the risk!
What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day? I'll never forget lifting off in a helicopter when everything was over. The floor was glass and Robert and I just looked down, watching all of our friends and family waving goodbye with sparklers. It was so beautiful and serene. The perfect ending to such a big day and huge party.
Did you write your own vows?  If so, what was your favorite phrase, verse or line? We didn't, but our brother-in-law married us. Unbeknownst to us, he read some things we had previously said about choosing each other and what we loved about each other. It was special to hear our own words being read out loud to each other.
What’s next for you as a couple?  What are you looking forward to in the future? Trying to squeeze all the fun wedding gifts into the small amount of space in our house is our current focus. After that, who knows!
