My favorite is what our family calls Hello Dollies! Melt a stick of butter, add a layer of crumbled vanilla wafers, a layer of semi-sweet chocolate chips, a layer of pecans, a layer of coconut and then pour one can of sweetened condensed milk evenly over the top. You put it in the oven and bake it at 350 degrees until it's golden brown (about 30 minutes). It's a sugar overload but, man oh man, IT IS DELICIOUS!!!!!!!!!!!!

My favorite southern sweet is Moravian Sugar Cake! Im from Winston- Salem, NC- and Christmas is all about the Moravian sugar cake, cookies and teas! Walking through historic Old Salem seeing all the windows lit- then stopping in the bakery for sugar cake is the best! It just melts in your mouth!

Love all the ones that have already been mentioned (but then truly, I have never met a dessert that I don't like...Southern, Northern, whatev) but I think my favorite is Red Velvet Cake. As a transplant to the South I just love how amazingly "southern" it is. And of course it helps that it's deliscious :)

homemade cherry pie, hands down! My grandfather taught me to make this easy dessert when I was about 5, and it's been a hit ever since :)

My goodness.....I'd have to say (without a doubt) that my absolute favorite Southern dessert is my Momma's Peach Pie. She actually makes her own homemade crust, takes half and roll it out for the bottom, and the other half She rolls out and cuts in to strips to pattern across the top (it's not only delicious, but pretty too). While She's doing that she is cooking her peaches with butter, sugar, and spices. Then she puts it all together and right before she puts it into the oven She pours melted butter over the top of it (this gives the crust a beautiful brown color), and lightly sprinkles some sugar and spices over it!

And that is MY Favorite Southern Dessert!!!!!

Ambrosia! For sure. It's a labor of love, and my favorite holiday dessert. The fruit of the gods!!

Red velvet cake... mmmm!

December 10, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterShantuck

Okay, it's hard to decide between red velvet cake with cream cheese frosting, buttermilk pie and...key lime bread pudding. Yes, that's right- KEY LIME, BREAD PUDDING. Hands down the best dessert I've had in my life. I don't know if it's a "southern" dessert but I had it in Charleston, South Carolina and though I'd died and gone to heaven. Key lime. Bread pudding. Who knew.

My favorite southern dessert is my grandmother's recipe of banana pudding. It's simple to make and simply delicious. There is never a family gathering without it!
